Academic Study Using Google Health Data

Google Health

What This App Does

This website is a research web application operated by Shimonoseki City University. Using Google OAuth, it connects to a participant's Google Health account and automatically collects wearable device (Fitbit) health data — such as steps, sleep, and heart rate — for use in an academic study on early screening indicators for dementia. It is used only by individuals who have been invited to participate in this study; it is not a public consumer service and offers no other functionality.

About This Project

Study title: "Usefulness of Biometric Data from Wearable Devices for Dementia Screening: A Preliminary Study"
Principal Investigator: Prof. Kohei KAJIWARA, Faculty of Nursing, Shimonoseki City University
Study period: April 2026 – May 31, 2027
Ethics approval: No. 2537-0319, Shimonoseki City University Research Ethics Committee

This is a preliminary study examining the relationship between lifestyle factors measured by a wearable device (Fitbit) — including walking activity, physical activity, sleep, and circadian rhythms — and cognitive function in community residents. The aim is to explore the feasibility of novel screening indicators for early prediction and prevention of dementia, and to validate the measurement devices and system.

With participant consent, this system securely connects to Google Health via OAuth 2.0 to collect wearable sensor data during the 14-day participation period for academic analysis.

Data We Collect and Why

This research system automatically retrieves the following data from the Google Health API once every morning, covering the previous day's data. Collection is performed by the university's server and requires no action from you after your initial authorization.

OAuth ScopeData AccessedPurpose of Use
openid Google-assigned unique user identifier (sub) To link retrieved data to your participant record. No name, email address, or other Google profile data is retrieved.
activity_and_fitness.readonly Step count, exercise sessions, distance, activity levels, sedentary time, total calories, activity calories, heart rate zone calories, altitude, floors, active zone minutes To analyze the relationship between daily physical activity, walking speed, and activity stability with cognitive function. Prior research has shown that decreased walking speed and reduced physical activity are significantly associated with increased risk of dementia onset.
sleep.readonly Sleep sessions (including sleep stages), daily sleep temperature deviation To examine the relationship between sleep quality (efficiency, fragmentation, bedtime/wake time), circadian rhythms, and cognitive function. Evidence suggests that sleep fragmentation and circadian rhythm disruption begin in the pre-clinical stage of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease.
health_metrics_and_measurements.readonly Heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV), daily resting heart rate, daily HRV, blood oxygen saturation (SpO2), daily SpO2, core body temperature, VO2 max, running VO2 max To assess autonomic nervous system activity, physiological stress responses, and sleep stage quality in relation to cognitive function. Daily variations in HRV, skin temperature, and respiration rate serve as biomarkers for accurately capturing circadian rhythm disruption.
ecg.readonly Electrocardiogram (ECG) readings To assess cardiac electrical activity (heart rhythm) as an additional physiological indicator of autonomic nervous system function, complementing heart rate variability data in relation to cognitive function.

How to Grant Access

Eligibility: Residents of Shimonoseki City aged 50–71, not diagnosed with dementia (target: 40 participants). Participation period: 14 days of wearing the Fitbit device.

Benefits: Participation provides you with a visual record of your own health and sleep rhythms, which may serve as a useful reference for health maintenance.

Risks: There is a very rare possibility of discomfort or allergic skin reactions at the device attachment site on the wrist. Data synchronization via your smartphone may incur internet data charges depending on your plan.

If you have been instructed by a research staff member to complete this registration, please follow the steps below.

  1. Click the button below.
  2. The Google sign-in screen will open. Sign in with the Google account linked to your Google Health application.
  3. Review the requested permissions and click the "Allow" button.
  4. That's all — your registration is complete. Thank you!

After the 14-day participation period ends, a member of the research team will revoke your Google account access permission. Data collection will stop immediately upon revocation. You do not need to take any action yourself.
